Week 9 – Here comes the snow again, maybe, probably

SATURDAY’S REVISED ROUTE

As we inch our way towards March the weather forecast gets more Januaryish. This weekend’s forecast is for rain/sleet/snow on Sunday Morning, March 1st. It’s bad enough the winter won’t end but why does it keep aiming for Sunday?

With the weather forecast getting more certain of bad weather starting early Sunday Morning, people are encouraged to make their own plans for a long run on Saturday. If people make one solid plan we can look at providing water stops along the way. I learned last time we did this though that not everyone will get the word and there will probably be a group running Sunday no matter what.

Here’s your chance to be heard. If you’re a regular and you’re running Stu’s this weekend, let me know. If you’re training with us this weekend, let me know if you prefer to just run on Sunday in the snow. If you want to run on Saturday, do you want to run in the AM or more like noon? Speak up and we’ll get a plan together.

dont count on me, I am tied up Sat and have to be somewhere early sun. it may be the gym for me.

  2. Ginny Rowe says:

I’m doing Stu’s. Hopefully, there won’t be any competition with the snowplows!

  3. Nick Lamberti says:

    Jim!

I am in for Saturday anytime! Looks light light snow for Sunday with winds from 10-15 mph. I am sure the Stu won’t cancel but I rather get the run in tomorrow & not miss the workout even with my sore Achilles. This Sunday is the L St. 22 mile run in from Hopkinton & we might have some company. I will check back. Can we move today’s weather to tomorrow that would be a blast!

  4. Peter Fopiano says:

I would prefer Saturday as well, I know we got lucky last week but don’t feel so lucky this week! I would rather get it done in the morning but noon would be OK too.

  5. Jennifer Rapaport says:

I am trying to find out more details about a Sat run on the Boston course but if there is a long run of 18M happening in Melrose, that would be great too. I am definitely not running Sunday.

  6. Brian Gilroy says:

Saturday sounds good to me. I would prefer the usual time but I am flexible.

  7. Aileen Bonilla says:

    Hi,

I would rather run on Saturday as well, preferably early in the morning. Please post on the website if this is a go. I don’t mind the run being in Melrose or the Boston marathon course, just want to run 18 with other people at about a 9ish pace.

  8. Carol Carstensen says:

I wouldn’t mind getting the run in on Saturday. I missed a long run last week due to skiing and I really want to make sure I get it in this week.

  9. Sue Worrall says:

I’m planning to run tomorrow AM — can do the breakheart water stops if you choose that route —I’ll check back later on.

  10. Walter Drag says:

Good afternoon everyone… I will be running 18 Saturday 1230P… Brueggers. I cannot go earlier, due to work-sleep needs.

As for the snow Sunday.. there is still a 20 percent chance it will delay til 11am… Even if it does delay… i have run so many runs in 20s/wind and/or snow/sleet covered roads this winter that i am choosing a wonderful option… tomorrow-Sat 2/28. I just cant go early.

I can set up a single wstop at DD on Main and run us a loop that will bring us through the wstop at least 3 times for the 18 miles… which can be enough for many.

Running low on hydration reduces performance… but also mentally prepares for missing wstops due to crowds or M wstop problems…good practice.

    Walt

  11. Ed Torres says:

I can join you Walt. Can pick you up at DD at 12:15 if you’d like.

    Ed

  12. Walter Drag says:

Ed and I are definitely going…departure Brueggers 1230PM. one wstp DD…unless other would like to join us and also add a wstop.

Ed and I are meeting 1215P at DD to drop a car and our MRC identification shirt/supplies for the wstop.

Temp near 40 for this run.

I cannot yet guarantee timing of snow/sleet onset Sunday, but will try and repost here either late this afternoon at 6PM, or at 530am Saturday. attm…I am 80 pct certain of a start time for snow/sleet Melrose 2a-6a Sunday with 1 inch sleet/snow on the ground by 10a Sunday. However, there is a 20 pct option of a delay and that the Sunday morning run can be run dry. 🙂

The USA weather model ensembles, which generally perform best in the shorter range (out to 2 days)… are emphatic on a Sunday morning event.. while the Canadian/European models that we review are 6 to 12 hours slower. Thats the only reason i have 20 pct uncertainty on start time. This hopefully resolves by 5am Saturday.

So, we do not want to draw people from a Sunday run… I had to make a decision on whats best for my running schedule and would like milder/dry for one long run… For me I can sure that is Saturday.

  13. Christina Antico says:

    Jim,

    I’ll be running Stu’s…

  14. Jim says:

Has anyone been to Breakheart in the past few days? I’m wondering what the footing there is like. It’s been warm but I’m not sure of the ice conditions in there.

  15. John Mulroy says:

    Hi folks,
I am racing a short one tomorrow morning (Fudgcicle in Tewksbury, 5K), so would prefer to take chances and run Sunday morning, at 8:00. I don’t think there’ll be much on the ground by then, and the real snow is expected to start at 9:00.

Hoping to do 10 miles. Rather than needing official water stops, would anyone be interesting in meeting at the Stone Zoo parking lot Sunday at 8 am, and doing loops of 5 miles? There we could leave a car trunk open.

    John

  16. Walter Drag says:

ALL: I am curious where Stu’s is running. Future posts will include a comment on racing conds there. USA model guidance that forecasters use to assit decision making is becoming more strongly aligned on a snowy/sleety run 8am Thursday. For those who prefer alternate conditions… you may want to ck this site for my probably 545AM post Saturday morning regarding start time.

The window of running dry is lessening… about 10pct chance. check this site or the NWS forecast at 5am tomorrow.

by the way…those w plans Monday… this could easily be a snow day or two… ‘near’ blizzard conditions””” may “””” develop Monday if the precipitation is snow. there is still a chance of the monday storm being sleet or freezing rain but the data i am seeing is pointing to the worst winter storm of the season… and all the way from alabama to central NC .. coastal NJ Long island and Boston.

This will be prominent in the news i think…starting late tomorrow.

NOT in stone on the “near” blizzard but enough information is now available to be concerned and prepared for changes in plans.

    off duty, Walt

  17. Walter Drag says:

correction… thats snowy sleety run 8am “Sunday” not Thursday (midnightitus getting to me)

  18. Brian Gilroy says:

    Jim,
Just so happens that I was checking out breakheart today around 4:30. I was at the Wakefield entrance. I took a short walk in both directions and didn’t encounter any sections that were not runnable. I came across a couple of runners and asked for their opinions. They both said the hilly side was fine but there were a couple of iffy sections on the flat side.
    Brian

  19. Barry C. says:

I have to do my run on Sunday because I have to work tomorrow. If anyone wants to join me let me know.
    Thanks,
    Barry C.

  20. Lauren Cossette says:

I’ll probably just squeeze in a long run by my lonesome tomorrow. I’d love to join you all but I have a very important (and inconveniently timed!) hair cut appt. at 10:15. Have fun everyone and good luck to those doing Stu’s!

  21. Jennifer Rapaport says:

Walt- Stu’s is in Clinton MA with a start time of 11am.

I am going to run on the marathon course tomorrow so have a great run everyone. If the weather is OK, I may do the short run on Sunday am as well.

  22. Jim says:

OK, looks to me that we have two runs planned out for the weekend. Tomorrow, Saturday, at 12:30 from Brueggers with one water stop near Dunkin Donuts in Wakefield. The plan is brueggers to ws, ws out around Lake Q and back to ws, ws out Nahant to Breakheart and back to ws, ws back to Brueggers, and Brueggers out around Pine Banks. I may run parts of this run but I may be under time constraints. I’ll coordinate the water stop with Ed and Walt.

The second run will be Sunday Morning as scheduled. I don’t expect a big crowd, but I want to make sure anyone that shows up has company. I’ll try to drive around to ensure water stops for all unless the weather gets ridiculous.

This year has been challenging. I tend to try not to reschedule runs, most of the time the weather isn’t quite what its predicted to be (sorry Walt), and also it just makes planning more confusing… but with all the ice from this winter I can see the preference to run before it gets sloppy.

If you’re running Stu’s: Good Luck! If you’re running on your own, sorry for the interruption in our routine. If you’re running with us, we’ll see you this weekend.

  23. Nancy says:

between working and wrapping up my move, I’ll have to run on my own sometime Sunday or Monday. Good luck to the Stu runners!

  24. Joanne Piper says:

I’m pretty sure Sue and I and maybe Catherine will run tomorrow at 4pm, starting somewhere near Brueggers ( I think they might be closed by 4). We are doing 8-9 miles. I guess we will do the original route since Jim says it’s runnable. We can bring a few dollars and stop at the DD plaza for a drink. Anyone else is welcome to join us!

  25. Peter Fopiano says:

OK, I’m in for 12:30 saturday. I can place my car for another water stop or provide a ride back to brueggers. I will check back in the am for postings.

  26. Nick Lamberti says:

    OK!
I should be there for 12:30!
    Ngl

  27. Walter Drag says:

Sorry for the delayed 745 AM update. It will be a cold cloudy Sunday morning long run… and snow is likely…amounts a dusting to 1 inch during the run…tho there is still a chance it will delay. In any case… its not sleet or rain and possibly easily manageable. Wish i could offer more definition but its not as clear cut as I’d like. There is a small chance it will be be dry Sunday morning through 11 am…a glimmer of hope.

Nevertheless, running today-Saturday is better for me and ensures dry and at least some sunshine. Ed and I will be there today.

Thanks for your understanding of the slight uncertainty for tomorrow mornings light snow expectation.

    Walt

  28. Brian Gilroy says:

12:30 it is. See you then.

  29. Jim says:

I’ve posted a map for the improvised reduced water stops route for today’s and most likely tomorrow’s run. You can find it in the original body of this message as well as here:

    http://www.melroserunningclub.com/sundayrun/longruns/substitute-18m.pdf

DO NOT FOLLOW THE ROUTE POSTED UNDER THE MILEAGE TABLE!

I plan on manning the water stop and joining in for part of the run. I’ll check in with Ed/Walt once that’s confirmed. Anyone interested in running 9 miles today can start at the water stop before 1 and loop the lake and Breakheart with us, that’s my plan at this point.

Barry Cossette will be handling the water stop for tomorrow. Later today I’ll talk with him about which route will be run tomorrow.

  30. Carol Carstensen says:

I plan on being there today at 12:30.

  31. Audie Bridges says:

I’m interested in doing 16 tomorrow from Brueggers. Ill be there at 8

  32. Walter Drag says:

Stus in Clinton runs dry on Sunday…
