Week 12 – It’s the Big One

Week 12 of 15 in the fall is a big week. For those running the Baystate Marathon or the Hartford Marathon this is your final long run before your two week taper. For our BAA Half Marathon runners this is also your last long run before your one week taper. That is 22 miles for the marathoners and 10-13 for the half marathoners, depending on personal training preferences.

The routes will vary slightly, look for an update to them as a comment to this message sometime tonight or tomorrow. The water stops this week: WS1/4 will be handled by Walt. WS2 will be at Marianne Stanton’s house on RT38 in Medford. WS3 will be at the field on Mystic Valley Pkwy by the Middle School in Winchester. I’m still figuring this stop out. If there is anyone looking to run about 10 miles perhaps they could be picked up there in the morning and run back to their car from Brueggers. The final water stop is on Highland Ave in Medford near the Flynn Rink, which Kelly and Catherine will handle. Please confirm if you’re part of this plan or volunteer if you want to be.

It’ll be a rainy Sunday if the forecasts are correct (Walt?). I suggest a coating of vaseline on your feet to prevent blisters. I also suggest that you wear as much of your planned marathon/half-marathon day clothing as you can (conditions may hamper this) as its a great opportunity to find out if certain shirts/shorts/bras/socks will cause chaffing or other issues. It’s also an opportunity to test out your pre-race meals, Saturday’s dinner and Sunday’s breakfast should mimic race weekend in content and meal time. One last suggestion, if you haven’t tried a Gu on your run you should this week. It’s designed to get people through long runs, see how it works for you before you’re race.

That’s enough from me for now. Who’s in?

See you Sunday Morning, 8AM, Brueggers!
Jim

  1. Judi Chiavetta says:

I will be there for the whole enchilada-rain and all. Of course, I am holding out hope that the sun will make an appearance. Jim, let me know if you want me to drop my car off for the Winchester water stop. I would just need a ride to Bruegger’s and back to my car.

  2. Kelly Walsh says:

I’m in for the long one. I will still do the last water stop near Flynn Rink. I will bring my keys with me this time, I promise.

  3. Dave Hayes says:

Ok I have a question: If the weather is sloppy, I think I’d rather use a different shoe to spare my first-string from any accelerated wear. My second pair are in solid condition – not the same model, but I trust each set for long runs. Any rule or science on this? Am I sounding like a hothouse orchid?

  4. Lois Parker Carmona says:

I’m in but not for 22.

  5. Denyce Curis says:

I am in for 13 miles!! Let me know if anyone needs to be picked up or dropped off.

  6. Nancy says:

Judi, I can do as Jim suggested, leave my car as ws3, run from Brueggers to my car for 10. That’s enough for me to run, so, can you pick me up in Winchester?

  7. Ginny Rowe says:

I’m planning on running around 10+ this week. If we want to make the mystic ave w/s easier, we could use my sisters driveway. She lives very close to this spot (practically in her back yard) at 384 Main Street. I could set the supplies up at the end of her driveway. For the long runners that would mean taking the next left after mystic valley parkway onto main street, and go .2 miles to her house. Main street connects to Washington to continue on the route. I could bring the supplies back that evening, as I will be there for a birthday party. Let me know. Hopefully, it won’t rain too hard.

  8. Judi Chiavetta says:

Nancy, I’d be happy to pick you up in Winchester. Wanna say about 7:30 ish? I assume it’s around the place you “hosted” the water stop 2 weeks ago.

  9. Jen Randall says:

Hoping to do 13 as well as some drier weather…Fingers are crossed!!! See you then..

  10. Donna Leggiero says:

I am in for 13. Hoping for drier weather…..

  11. Walter Drag says:

in for the 11.1 route. suggestion on the shoes… My understanding our M shoes should have about 50-75 miles on them when we start that M. I can be corrected by others on this. So the shoe decisions these last weeks of preparation I think are as much based on our future mileage added to our current shoe mileage. Walt

  12. I’ll be there for the 22. Kelly, I’ll pick you up in morning.
Looking forward to a good run!

  13. Marianne Stanton says:

I look forward to seeing everyone at water stop 2…..it never rains in Medford!!!

  14. Jo-Ann says:

I’m in for 13 miles. See you at Brueggers at 8:00am. I hope the rain stops for run time

  15. Carol Carstensen says:

I’ll be there for the 22. Keeping my fingers crossed for the weather!

  16. Jim says:

Ok, now that I actually studied the original map I see I’ve changed the order of the route quite a bit. This run will resemble the 20 miler we did a few weeks back instead.

Walt- You’re WS is off Forest St. To do 19 you might want to start there and run the rest of the 21.7 mile with us. Otherwise you and your Garmin will figure it out. You also have the option of catching a ride with Judi and Nancy and starting with us. Let us know what you want.

BAA Halfers – For a scenic 13 mile you can join in at the Stone Zoo and finish up there.

Nancy – Your run looks to be actually 11 miles. If that sounds long to you, let me know. I’ll stop by and drop off the supplies later today.

Anybody Else – You can tailor your distance to anything you want. A 9.0 mile route is posted in the original post above, in it you’ll find the distances from various turns off of Highland Ave in Winchester.

Ginny – We’ll put of using your sisters house again, We’ll have one more smaller 22 mile run in mid-October which I hope to use it for.

Marianne – Thanks so much. We’ll be by your house at 9:00 give or take 10-15 minutes. Expect about 25 runners.

    Any questions?
See you all tomorrow at 8!
    Jim

  17. Peter Fopiano says:

I’ll be there for the 22! Sounds like the water stops are covered but I can help with shuttling as needed.

  18. Lois Parker Carmona says:

I know that I don’t have time to fit in 21.7 miles… I’ll figure out something in the 15-17 mile range.

    off to study the map.

  19. Lois Parker Carmona says:

I guess I’ll just join in at Grimsby’s- that should make it about 18ish, right?

  20. Denyce Curis says:

For all the BAA half-marathoners..let’s meet in the parking lot directly across from the Stone Zoo by 8:10. See you there.

  21. Dave McCaldon says:

I should be there for the 22. Looks like we’ll have Tropical Storm Kyle to keep us company.

  22. Jen Randall says:

Sounds great!! I will meet you across from the zoo w/ my life jacket…lol

  23. Jocelyn Stanick says:

    Hi guys,

Kevin and I will do about 12.5 miles. We’ll meet up with you guys at the 2 mile mark around 8:15ish (where Pond Street takes a right), that way we can just walk there. See you guys then.

    Jocelyn

  24. Sue Clough says:

I will probably meet you guys at Water stop 1 and run to WS 3 for 8 ish miles.

  25. Beth Ford says:

I plan on doing some variation in the 10-12 range. I’ll start from my house on West Wyoming and join the group when you all run by. See you in the morning!

  26. Brian Gilroy says:

I will probably be there for 9 or 10. Hopefully it won’t be pouring.

  27. Jocelyn Stanick says:

Just wanted to let you know Leann is going to run too. She just called me. She is either going to meet us for 12 or do 10 and meet at WS1.

  28. Walter Drag says:

Good Sunday morning: Prepare WET for our run… blister pads for the hot spots of the feet in advance, body glide for the shorts and arms chafing areas.

Rainfall less than one quarter inch on our run i think but enough to be a possible problem on an 18plus run if not not cared for in advance.

Jim I;ll be at your house around 715a for pick up and posting wstop at eugene/forest revised wst 1/4.

Also, please leave Brueggers without me if I dont arrive there… my intent is to run 19 continuous as if an M. So my goal is to arrive Brueggers 810am or thereabouts.

    Later, Walt

  29. Jennifer Rapaport says:

Good morning! I am awake…..I am coming! I may just do 16 or so….am going to make that call on the course, but will be running the longer course to start. Jennifer
