Week 13 – Tapering for some

April ushers in the final month of the Winter Long Run Program. Yes, where approaching the end of another season. Many of the Halfs have come and gone, Boston runners start their taper, and Providence Marathoners are fast approaching their tapers.

This week we do a slow, easy 14.8  mile run if you’re running Boston. It’s key to remember that your training is done, now you’re preparing for race day. There is no cramming for a marathon so pushing it now isn’t going to amount to much, except maybe an injury. Enjoy this run!

For those running Providence, we’ll need to tack on another 3 miles or so. This can be done late in the run with a loop around Quannapowitt or at the end of the run with a loop around Pine Banks. I’m thinking Quannapowitt but can be convinced otherwise. What do you think?

The rest of you have options. Follow the route and decide to loop back to Brueggers at Main St (~4.5 miles), at Wyoming (~7 miles), or at Main later in the run (~8 miles).

To help with spreading out the water stop supplies, one again ROLL CALL! Who’s in and for how far?

In for 18, with an extra loop around lake Q being my preference.

  2. Ed Torres says:

    I’m in for 15.

  3. Nancy says:

I’ll go with the Lake crowd

  4. Walter Drag says:

In for 16. overcast. a “chance” of drizzle but it may not be enough to wet the ground…headwind (north to northeast) of 15 mph from mile 4.5-11 and then a great cruise home-wind at our backs. temps 37-41 for this run. wind breaker, mittens and headband for the ears is what I am planning and probably not running in shorts tho its doable. may post at 630a Sunday after looking out the window and a quick radar check.

  5. Mike York says:

I’m up for a little extra around lake q.

Especially for Andy who specifically expressed interest:

Boston is edging into the viewfinder. Will post on Forum Sunday afternoon.

The following is stated with the inherent uncertainty in a specific deterministic forecast 17 days in advance. In other words, lets not do any declarative shout outs. I’d like to see this work…but am grounded in the reality that even with all the tools we have at our disposal… the pattern can change.

There is a reasonably strong probability that Boston will run in no heat. Hazarding a guess… 42-50f start temp and finish in temps between 52-62. wind not a huge factor. weather… partly cloudy to cloudy. depending on timing of an approaching cold front or storm system from the midwest…there may be shower risk.

Pattern is hot in the Rockies with a flattening wnw flow aloft here…coming out of a cooler than normal pattern that we should experience here the week of the 13th-20th. that means while it may be trying to warm up somewhat ahead of an approaching cold front or storm system…clouds should cap any potential warming

summary: dewpoints relatively low and odds in my opinion strongly favor no 70F+ finishing temps. Pobabilistically and climatologically odds favor less than 65F finishing temp.

I am hopeful if we look back, that this interpretation was reasonably accurate.

Tomorrow as the ensemble mix come into view… i’ll post on the forum as a fwiw and only update if its radically different. Am hopeful that tomorrows post is stable–ie similar to the sneak peek of today.

  7. Andrew Pate says:

From your mouth to God’s ears Walt! I am in for the EASY 14 plus.

  8. Michael Quigley says:

Good luck everyone! Hopefully this is my last week skiing so I should be back out next week to help with the water stops. Enjoy!

  9. Beth Ford says:

I plan to be there for 7-8 miles.

  10. Mike MacNeil says:

    I plan on 18.

  11. Brian Gilroy says:

I’m in for an easy 15.

  12. Sue Clough says:

Going to Cohasset, I hope everyone has a nice, EASY run!

  13. Julie D'Andrea says:

I’m not running, but I can do your first water stop if you need help. I’d have to meet you for supplies at Bruggers. Let me know,

Later, I’m going to run (or jog, or walk?) a 5k with a bunch of 9 year olds! and I sincerely hope I beat them all! But then, it’s not about me, it’s about getting them to have fun and making sure their parents aren’t mad that I cause shin splints or twisted ankles in their kids!

  14. Donna Leggiero says:

    I am in – hoping for 7.

  15. Jocelyn Stanick says:

I’m planning to make it – skiied today so we’ll see how the legs are feeling. would like to try for at least 6. See you in the morning

  16. Hi, will be there for the 7 mile run, Kelly Walsh will be, too.

  17. Joanne Piper says:

Going to Cohasset with Sue- see you next week!

  18. Jim says:

Oooh, lot’s going on here. I haven’t been watching so if you were waiting for answer, sorry. I count 14+ tomorrow, nice.

Julie, I think we’re all set. We would appreciate the help but I think the plan is already in motion and it’s too late to change now. Next week some of us will be doing 20+ so there should be opportunities for extended water stop duties, we would love the help. Watch for Ed’s plea for help mid week. So, are you training kids just so you have more people to beat? 🙂

See you all in the morning. Brueggers, 8AM.

  19. Walter Drag says:

Looks to me like we’re running in 39-43 temps… radar is pretty clean right now but sprits of drizzle may begin around 10a 11a…odds right now favor dry. wind picks up a bit from the ne from it where it is right now. looks nearly ideal! wd 632 am.
