The final week – Congrats, Thanks, and So Long

BREAKHEART – 11.9 Mile Run

This week will be the final long run of the Fall training session and with that we’ll try to rap a few things up.

First, congratulations to all that ran Baystate. We had a mix of goals going into that race, some looking to qualify for Boston, some hoping to just complete their first marathon, and others just putting another notch on their marathon belt. Amazingly I think everyone was successful in doing what they planned to. Great to see!

Second, thanks to all that contributed to my very nice and very generous gift. Its been a pleasure to work with all of you to put together a very successful long run programs. Seeing our speedy runners excel at races around the globe, our veterans push themselves through the familiar grind of training in hopes of reaching new goals, and (my favorite part) the rookies heading into places they’ve never been before with wide eyes and great hopes. Seeing all that and knowing I had a little to do with everyone’s experience is thanks enough for the times I pick up the water, Gatorade and Gu and figure out which hill to make you climb each week.

For those that weren’t there Tuesday, after the fancy gift with the money to treat my car to a nice de-water-stop cleaning, for some reason my car turned on me and refused to start late Tuesday night. $500+ dollars later its back up on its tires and ready to go. I’m thinking twice about giving it a treat though, I might just treat myself to many many Snickers bars after my marathon is done 🙂

And now for the So Long… this is the last long run of the season. One final 12 mile run, most likely out Main St and cutting over to Breakheart for one last jaunt through some big hills. I’ll post a map tomorrow and will need help for two water stops. I don’t have any water stop supplies. I think Lois has one bin and Sue has two? We can discuss how we want to do this after I know who plans on coming.

ROLL CALL! Who’s in?

    I’m in.

I do have a box of supplies. A little scant, but sufficient. Would be happy to be a water stop on this final run of this season. Sad to see the training is over already… of course there is still the big race and others after it. This has been a great stretch of training runs – LOTS of laughs, great spirits, fantastic company, excellent post-run coffee chats… oh yeah, and the running has been really good, too.

    looking forward to 12 miles.

  2. Judi Chiavetta says:

I wouldn’t miss the last long run of the season!! I would also be happy to provide a water stop with my big blue van. Just let me know what you need me to do.
I should have known you’d make us do Breakhart one more time:) I’m sure the foliage will help get me through those hills.
Looking forward to 12 and hoping it’s nice enough to enjoy a few final minutes on Bruegger’s Beach!

  3. Denyce Curis says:

I will be there for the last run of the season! Don’t think I will do the full 12, but some variation. Sounds like you already have your two water stop volunteers, but if I can pick someone up or help in any way, let me know. Will check back on Saturday.

  4. Beth Ford says:

Count me in! Kristen and Audrey should be there as well – we ran Breakhart last week so we should be ready to take on those hills 🙂

  5. Sue Clough says:

I’m in for the 12 I think(……was thinking more like 11 but we’ll see). I have plenty of water stop supplies so I would be happy to do a water stop. Are we going by one stop twice? Let me know where to go and if someone can pick me up. I’m in Stoneham, Saugus and Melrose most of the day and will check back later.

  6. Jim says:

The map is posted. It came out to 11.9 miles. If you want to cut off a mile you can cut across the inner loop of Breakheart. If you want to add a mile finish turn on the Fellsway to W Wyoming towards the end of the run. If you want to join us for almost 6 miles you can start with us and turn around at the first water stop… or even better join in at the first water stop and Run up and around Breakheart with us.

Let’s have Sue’s car at Nick’s Pizza (Main & Nahant) and Lois, you can meet me at Breakheart and I’ll add some Gatorade to your bin? Judi, you could pick up Sue… although if Nancy is running she drives right by there and could do it much easier. You guys can figure that out. Sue if you want more Gatordae, let me know, I can leave some out on my front steps for you to pick up today or I can swing by your house to drop some off later today.

See you all at 8AM, Brueggers!

  7. Lois Parker Carmona says:

I have 3 individual-size bottles of gatorade and 1 gallon of water. and snickers. Not sure if that will serve all, but maybe an extra bottle of gatorate might be good.

I’ll be in breakheart, in the rink parking lot, about 7:45.

  8. Lois Parker Carmona says:

Change that – I just looked at the map. I’ll put my car closer to the hut so that it’s on the loop.

  9. Donna Leggiero says:

I am in for 6 or 8 and will plan to meet at Breugeer’s. See you in the AM.

  10. Julie D'Andrea says:

Sorry about your car Jim! And as always, thank you for all the organization an planning to keep the long runs going.

It was great to read everyone’s race reports too! Congratulations to all on an amazing job!

I’m thinking of running 9 miles by going back to Brueggers from water stop 2 via the Fellwsay.

    Julie

  11. Joanne Piper says:

I’m going to try for 11- will do the inner Bheart loop. You saved the best for last! Driving by there today I hoped tomorrow’s run was going there. It’s our most scenic route! If it’s of any help to you Jim- I can get Lois at 7:45. I can drive by there on my way to Brueggers and bring gatorade with me. Let me know.

  12. Sue Clough says:

Whoever is picking me up, if you have an extra roll or half used roll of paper towels, I think that is the only thing I’m missing.

  13. Nancy says:

I’ll pick up Sue at Nick’s pizza and I’ll bring some paper towels.

  14. Kelly Walsh says:

I might run about 6 weather dependent. I will start a bit later than everyone and try to meet up after at Breugger’s for a cup of coffee. Hope everyone has a good run.
    Kelly

  15. liz says:

hoping to join for thr final 6-although an unlucky route for me! I think will meet in breakhart. liz

  16. Jen Randall says:

    Hi everyone,

I can not believe I am going to have to miss the last official long run of the season. Especially those hills!! Wish I could make it but can’t get a sitter since my husband is trying a trail road race. Have a great run and thanks to everyone for a great training season, especially Jim. I appreciated all your help. I can’t wait for the next one! See you soon.

    Jen

  17. Jo-Ann says:

I’m planning to run, but I’m not sure how far maybe 8 miles. See everyone at Brueggers.

  18. Jim says:

    Hi Joanne,

Thanks for the offer but I’ll go get Lois. I have plenty of Gatorade stored up here so I wouldn’t want anyone to buy more.

    See you in the morning!

  19. Julie D'Andrea says:

Don’t wait for me, I’m not feeling so great and am going to have to pass this morning.

  20. Kaj Kandler says:

Sorry, I missed the last long run of the season. I got sick last night and had a night of headache and pain. So I skipped (overslept).

Jim sorry to hear about your car. We all love to see it when we are on the trail 🙂

  21. Dave Hayes says:

I ran to Lake Q, around it, and back home for seven. Humid!
