Week 8 – Labor Day Weekend Long Run

As summer comes to the close and the kids head back to school our Sunday Long Runs are just beginning a stretch of some intense training miles. This week is 18 for the marathoners, 9 for the half marathoners. This route is a tough one to cover water stop wise so all the help I can get will be needed.

The run begins with a trip out to Breakheart along the Fellsway to the Saugus entrance. We need one stop in the parking lot there that we’ll pass going in and coming out. From there the half marathoners follow the same way back to complete 9 miles. The long runners head out to Farm St. If you ran the Law Enforcement Half when it was in Wakefield you’ll recognize the next part of the run. With a stop at Wakefield HS (Walt’s covering this one) we’ll head out Montrose St to Rte 129 and head over to Lake Quannapowitt. Another stop in the Converse parking lot starts the next stretch down North Ave to Main St. One last stop at the corner of Nahant and Main before heading back Main St to Brueggers to finish off 18 miles.

That’s 5 water stops which means I may need 5 or 6 volunteers this week. Demi has volunteered the help of her and her kids. Before I figure out the tasks let’s see who’s willing to help with either the use of their car or pick up/drop off duties. So Roll Call: who’s running and who’s willing to help pull this one off? I’ll start figuring out who’ll have to go where and do what once I get the list of helpers.

Thanks,
Jim

I’ll do either a waterstop or a pick up/drop off. Just put me where you need me.

I’m in for… gulp… 18. Not sure if I can make it, but i’m gonna give it a go.

  2. Dave Hayes says:

I can drop a car off at Waterstop 4 and give the leaders the combination to open the door upon their arrival. Need ride to/from WS4.

  3. Julie D'Andrea says:

    I’m in for the 9.

If you need a water stop volunteer, I could do 1 and 2 and loop Breakheart a few times instead of starting at Brueggers.

    Let me know,

    Julie

  4. Denyce Curis says:

I will be running the 9 mile route.. and can do a dop off or pick up – if I can be of any help. I’m out all day Saturday.. but will check the forum on Saturday night to see if you need me.

  5. Hi, I can do a water stop if you need it. You can email me crkane2003@yahoo.com.
Oh, I’ll be running the 18 miles, too.

  6. Carol Carstensen says:

I’m a friend of Jennifer Rapaport (but nowhere near her speed) and I am training for Baystate. She recommended your group and I would love to join you for your long run. I’ve been doing the long runs on my own but I am sure it would be nicer with company.

    Carol

  7. Judi says:

I plan to be there for the 18 even though I despise Breakhart! Let me know what I can do for a water stop or whatever you need..

  8. Jim says:

To complicate things even more my car is in the shop over the weekend 🙁

So volunteers, somehow we need to get supplies out to the spots. People can either pick up supplies tonight from my home or tomorrow morning early. Or if you want to just buy a gallon of water, two medium bottles of Gatorade, and some gu or candy and provide your own supplies I’ll reimburse you tomorrow. E-mail me at jimcarson@melroserunningclub.com and I’ll give you directions to my house if you need to pick up supplies.

So my plan is to have:
Julie take Breakheart, Denyce pick her up.
Walt take Wakefield HS, if he wants Denyce could pick him up too.
Dave park at the Converse parking lot somewhere near the route. Lois can pick you up.
Catherine park at the corner of Nahant and Main St where Nick’s pizza is, and Lois can pick you up too.

If you’re leaving your car please put a piece of paper with MRC scrawled on it so we know we’re opening the right car.

Again, e-mail me if you need supplies from me and we’ll work out how to pick it up.

Thanks for the extra help everyone,
We’ll make sure to wait for everyone before taking off tomorrow,
    JimC

(And Carol, we’ll be happy to have your company. This week might be light on the runners due to the holiday so I can’t promise too much company though)

  9. Donna Leggiero says:

I am planning to run 9 miles. I do not want to confuse things…..but I could easily pick up Julie and Walt if it is easier for Denyce. I am right in Melrose. I will check in later….

  10. Denyce Curis says:

Donna – I offered since I was one of the first to reply and wanted to be sure we were covered.. but it looks like we have lots of volunteers and definitely makes sense if you can do it since you are right in Melrose.
I will see you at Brueggers for the run.

  11. Lois Parker Carmona says:

Sounds good to me – Dave and Catherine, I’ll pick you up. If anything changes in the morning, give me a call on my cell – 781-424-5183.

  12. Walter Drag says:

Donna can you pick me up at Wakefield HS…I’ll park there at 745am.. and then run the 9 and finish with a run back to my car…gets me perfect miles.

Jim, i’ll pick up the goods at about 730-35 am.

Just need a confirmation from Donna. Thanks, Walt

  13. Jen Randall says:

    Hi all,

Sorry to respond late as I was trying to confirm a sitter due to my husband working. I would of volunteered to help out but not sure if one of the kids has something brewing (due to the crying and droopy eyes)..So I am hoping to be there to do the 9 miles. I go right by Breakheart and can pick up Julie. If something comes up w/ the kids, I can always call Donna to pick her up. Just a thought since I go right by and have every INTENTION to be there tomorrow. Just let me know and I will check back later.. Thanks!

  14. Jim says:

Ok, so all the pick up people seem set, Walt will pick up his water supplies from me in the moring. I just need Julie, Dave, and Catherine to confirm whether they are buying supplies or picking up from me tonight/tomorrow morning.

    Thanks for all the help!
    Jim

  15. Kelly Walsh says:

I’m in for 18. I will help out at one of the next runs with water stops since you seem to be all set.

  16. Dave Hayes says:

My Car is a white Ford Explorer with gold bumpers. I have water and gatorade and will sort out candy option this evening. Car will be parked in row closest to the lawn and lake.

I’ll make sure that the car is marked otherwise…. MRC written on paper under wiper blade, probably.

  17. Donna Leggiero says:

I will plan to pick up Walt @ 7:45 @ Wakefield High School. My cell # is 781-307-0213. It sounds like Jen is picking up Julie. Jen, if you can’t just call me and I’ll pick her up after Walt. Either way Julie, you’ll get picked up by a red Explorer.

  18. Julie D'Andrea says:

Jim, I”ll get supplies at your house early. like 7:40. Ok?

  19. Walter Drag says:

Thanks Donna, Prob wont have my cell… see you 745 a

  20. Jen Randall says:

    Julie,

I’ll come and get you at Breakheart.. See you then..

  21. Rick Collette says:

I have some free time on Sunday so I can be at the start (7:45) to fill in any voids in the water stop plan.

    Rick

  22. Ginny Rowe says:

I’ll be there for the run. I’ve got some birthday cake calories to run off!

  23. Jim says:

Ok looks like everything’s lined up to get water stop supplies sprinkled around the Melrose/Wakefield/Saugus area. Thanks everyone for your cooperation, it really reflects the great group atmosphere that’s developed with the Sunday Run. I ended up with more helpers than I needed (we’ll still need you for the 20 and 22 milers so don’t go anywhere)

Thanks especially to Walt who has helped all season setting up the first water stop of every run while he gets a few extra miles in. This week is Walt’s last taper run before heading to France to run the Medoc Marathon. Good Job and Good Luck Walt!!

See you all at 8AM, Brueggers!

  24. Eve Moura says:

I’m in for 18, and can help out with next week’s water stops…Thanks for pulling things together this week, everyone!
